Four Suggestions to Help Enterprises “Going Global”

In the autumn of 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a grand initiative to build “The Belt and Road” to the world during his visit to Central Asia and Southeast Asian countries. Enterprises are the main body and backbone of “The Belt and Road” construction. “The Belt and Road” construction also brings new opportunities for Chinese enterprises to “Going Global”. In the past five years, the enthusiasm of Chinese enterprises in the construction of “The Belt and Road” has continued to soar. From the construction of engineering projects to green space investment and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, Chinese enterprises have been accelerating their pace towards "The Belt and Road" in recent years.

The National Information Center “The Belt and Road” Big Data Center recently released the “The Belt and Road” Big Data Report (2017) (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”) to comprehensively evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the “The Belt and Road” construction using big data technology. The Report points out that at present, Chinese enterprises are still facing problems such as low level of participation in international standard-setting, low level of internationalization of enterprise talents, weak communication ability between enterprises and foreign non-governmental organizations, and insufficient ability to deal with risks and dispose of them, all of which restrict their influence.

In view of the above shortcomings, the Report puts forward four suggestions to help enterprises to further enhance their influence and facilitate better “Going Global”.

First, we should attach importance to the overseas image building of enterprises and actively do a good job in the publicity of products and services through domestic and foreign media and other channels. The process of deepening the overseas image of an enterprise into “The Belt and Road” is also the process of transmitting Chinese brands and Chinese culture. Enterprises should strengthen the construction of multilingual versions of websites when making publicity, especially provide website publicity in localized languages in combination with the needs of key business expansion areas of enterprises, and actively build online windows for communication with local public. Dare and be good at dealing with the media and non-governmental organizations in the host country, and publicize the corporate image with the help of local media, experts and the public. At the same time, enterprises should appropriately set up overseas liaison offices, attach importance to offline publicity and promotion activities, and expand the influence of Chinese products and “Made in China” by optimizing products and services.

Second, raise the awareness of localization, actively fulfill the local social responsibility, and build an international enterprise with tolerance of multi-culture. Enterprises should be honest and trustworthy in “Going Global”, actively discuss the international economic cooperation mechanism with countries along the route, strengthen exchanges and interactions with governments, various non-governmental organizations and enterprises, cultivate the awareness of localization, actively learn and master local systems and cultures, comply with local laws and customs, and actively integrate into local cultures. At the same time, actively fulfill corporate social responsibility, help countries and regions along the line to build public infrastructure such as schools and hospitals, organize various education and training for local residents, and solve practical problems such as employment and medical treatment of local residents, so as to close the distance with the local government and the public, strive to become an internationalized enterprise with multi-cultural tolerance, and enhance the internationalization level and influence of enterprises.

Third, we should establish an international management concept and strengthen the cultivation of international talents and the construction of independent innovation capability. The language and culture, business rules, legal system and industry standards of the countries along “The Belt and Road” are completely different from those in China, which requires higher management level and innovation ability of enterprises. Enterprises should establish an international management concept, strengthen the training of “high-tech” talents, especially the training of senior management personnel and professional and technical personnel in planning, publicity, research and development, and create various advantages in enterprise standards, technology, brand and management. Enterprises should actively apply international advanced production technology and experience, accelerate product research and development, improve product added value, increase investment in technology research and development, strengthen independent innovation capacity building, and improve international comprehensive competitiveness.

Fourth, strengthen the awareness of risk prevention and enhance the ability to deal with risks. The political, economic and social environment of the countries along “The Belt and Road” route is complicated, and the survival and development of Chinese enterprises “Going Global” in the host country face diversified risks. On the one hand, relevant state departments should strengthen the policy and legal support for domestic enterprises to “Going Global”, actively encourage and guide enterprises to participate in “The Belt and Road” project, speed up the construction of thematic databases, timely release relevant information, do a good job in risk analysis and early warning, set up overseas investment risk funds, and enhance the anti-risk capability of enterprises. On the other hand, in the process of “Going Global”, enterprises should pay attention to relevant information collection and judgment, strengthen the awareness of risk prevention, pay special attention to the important role of intellectual property rights in the influence of enterprises, and learn to use international business rules to protect the core competitiveness and competitive advantage of enterprises. At the same time, it is also possible to prevent and avoid risks by purchasing insurance or using financial instruments and other measures.
